The answer in plain English
The Nifty Smallcap 250 methodology covers the 250 companies ranked 251–500 within the Nifty 500 framework. This is not the same as every small-cap company in India, nor necessarily the same as another small-cap index. An active small-cap fund can follow a different portfolio-selection process.
What to check
- Confirm the complete index name, methodology and rebalance rules.
- Verify an actual investible scheme, its ISIN and its official document; an index level is not a fund unit price.
- Compare tracking difference, tracking variability and current expenses for matching benchmarks.
- For ETFs, add bid–offer spread and trading quantity to the comparison.
A useful comparison
| Term | Meaning | Common confusion |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty Smallcap 250 | A defined index universe | All small companies in India |
| Small-cap index fund | A fund following a specified index | Any active small-cap fund |
| Small-cap ETF | A listed fund following its disclosed mandate | Every product containing a similar brand suffix |
| Index level | A calculated benchmark number | The purchase price of a fund unit |
Make the distinction clear
Example: two funds can both use “small-cap” in their names while one tracks 250 constituents and another tracks a different basket. Their overlap, sector weights and return history can differ. Compare the benchmark before comparing fees. If a search phrase does not identify a verified ticker, use the official scheme document instead of guessing that a security exists.
One final question before acting
Does the figure or document match the exact scheme, plan, option, period and purpose in your question? Keep the source date with the answer. For a real transaction or personal decision, the current scheme documents and your own records take priority over a saved educational example.
