Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.
How it works
“Index fund” describes an approach, not one universal portfolio. Two products can follow completely different universes and weights. A notice should therefore identify the exact index, and an exposure estimate should identify the exact scheme. The name of a fund house alone cannot establish which portfolio will change.
A simple example
A hypothetical fund tracks Benchmark A while a company enters Benchmark B. The Benchmark B notice does not, by itself, change Fund A’s target holdings. A separate mandate or membership link would be needed before claiming a required purchase.
What to check
- Match the security change to the scheme’s benchmark.
- Check replication method and dated holdings.
- Avoid treating all passive AUM as the affected AUM.
