Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.
How it works
Coupon is attached to contractual payments, while the investor pays a market price for those payments and redemption. A discount or premium changes the economics. For a real comparison, include dates, accrued-interest treatment and the complete relevant terms rather than assume all securities trade at face value.
A simple example
A hypothetical lower-coupon security bought at a sufficient discount can have a yield different from what its coupon ranking suggests. This illustration does not provide a priced yield for either government security named in the October rebalance notice.
What to check
- Get actual prices and remaining cash-flow dates.
- Distinguish coupon ranking from yield ranking.
- Keep uncalculated yields out of definitive claims.
