Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.

How it works

This is useful around corporate or index events that attract attention to a position. The event itself does not remove concentration risk. Keep additions, withdrawals and changes in other assets visible when moving from a simple illustration to an actual portfolio calculation.

A simple example

A hypothetical ₹50,000 holding in a ₹10 lakh portfolio is 5%. If it rises to ₹1 lakh while other assets remain ₹9.5 lakh, the total becomes ₹10.5 lakh. The new weight is approximately 9.52%, not exactly 10%.

What to check

  • Recalculate the complete portfolio denominator.
  • Include cash flows and other asset changes.
  • Review concentration after gains as well as purchases.
