Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.
How it works
The next investment should be assessed for the role it needs to serve. Chasing a similar headline coupon can introduce a different issuer or liquidity risk. For a debt fund, the replacement allocation also affects its future income and sensitivity within the mandate. The old security’s coupon cannot forecast the new portfolio return.
A simple example
A hypothetical ₹1 lakh bond matures after paying one level of income. Comparable replacement opportunities now offer a different yield. Maintaining the old income by accepting much higher risk would change the investment decision, not merely continue the original contract.
What to check
- Compare replacement yield, credit and liquidity together.
- Match the next maturity to the money’s purpose.
- Do not assume the old coupon can be renewed unchanged.
