The answer in plain English
A fund-house total combines many strategies, plans and investor types. A large debt business can make an AMC large without establishing leadership in a particular equity mandate. Research sites can also show disclosed holdings values or tracked-scheme totals; those are not automatically the industry’s net AUM.
What to check
- Choose month-end AUM or average AUM and state the reporting period.
- Check whether domestic fund-of-funds holdings are included in underlying scheme totals.
- Use the same unit, such as ₹ crore, across every row.
- After selecting a house to research, compare its individual schemes against appropriate category peers.
A useful comparison
| Measure | Interpretation | Wrong conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end AUM | Assets at one reporting date | Average assets over the quarter |
| AAUM | Average over the specified reporting window | A single day’s closing assets |
| AMC assets | Total across the manager’s included schemes | The size of one chosen scheme |
| Tracked holdings value | Coverage across disclosed positions | Necessarily net industry AUM |
Make the distinction clear
Illustration: House A may manage more money overall while House B has a larger fund in one particular category. Both statements can be true. Use AMFI’s dated AUM/AAUM disclosure for a size league table and the MF Analyser directory to open scheme ranges. The educational guide does not label a changing house ranking as a recommendation.
One final question before acting
Does the figure or document match the exact scheme, plan, option, period and purpose in your question? Keep the source date with the answer. For a real transaction or personal decision, the current scheme documents and your own records take priority over a saved educational example.
