The answer in plain English
Two investors can use identical monthly instalments and obtain different results because the schemes, dates and withdrawals differ. Conversely, a lump-sum investor and a SIP investor can own the same scheme. The schedule changes when units are purchased; it does not make the underlying holdings safer or give them a guaranteed growth rate.
What to check
- Write the full scheme name, plan and option; “SIP” alone does not identify an investment.
- Choose a contribution that can continue through ordinary expenses and emergencies.
- Compare funds within the intended category using consistent dates and the same plan.
- Check the goal’s deadline, current holdings and costs before selecting an aggressive category.
A useful comparison
| Layer | What you decide | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme | Underlying portfolio and mandate | Future outperformance |
| Plan and option | Cost route and distribution treatment | A different portfolio merely from direct/regular labels |
| SIP instruction | Amount, frequency and debit date | A fixed interest rate |
| Review | Whether the role still fits the goal | A reason to switch after every short-term ranking change |
Make the distinction clear
Worked illustration: ₹1,000 invested at NAV ₹100 buys 10 units. A later ₹1,000 at NAV ₹80 buys 12.5 units. At ₹80, the combined 22.5 units are worth ₹1,800 against ₹2,000 contributed. Averaging the purchase cost has not guaranteed a profit. Use the calculator to test several assumptions and the comparison tool to research the actual schemes.
Worked SIP scenarios for this question
Month-end instalments; monthly rate = annual assumption ÷ 12; no missed payments, step-up, fees, taxes or withdrawals. These are original calculations, not forecasts or historical returns of named funds. Real market paths can produce losses and do not grow at one fixed rate.
| Monthly contribution | Years | Scenario rate | Total contributed | Illustrative ending value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 1 | 6% assumed | ₹60,000 | ₹61,678 |
| ₹5,000 | 1 | 8% assumed | ₹60,000 | ₹62,250 |
| ₹5,000 | 1 | 10% assumed | ₹60,000 | ₹62,828 |
To reproduce a row, enter the contribution and period in the MF Analyser SIP calculator, select the stated rate convention and month-end timing, and keep excluded costs/tax settings consistent. A calculator may differ if it uses effective-monthly compounding or month-start payments. Differences from conventions are not evidence that a particular fund promises either result.
One final question before acting
Does the figure or document match the exact scheme, plan, option, period and purpose in your question? Keep the source date with the answer. For a real transaction or personal decision, the current scheme documents and your own records take priority over a saved educational example.
