IDBI Bank reported ₹2,205 crore of profit after tax for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, compared with ₹3,627 crore a year earlier. That is a fall of about 39%. The same release reports approximately 14% growth against its disclosed prior-year profit measure excluding a one-off NSDL investment-sale gain.
These statements are not mutually exclusive. The earlier period contained income that did not recur on the same basis. The right response is to understand the comparison, not to erase the reported decline or to assume that it proves a collapse in recurring lending performance.
Three profit figures explain the story
The current earnings release identifies a ₹1,699 crore one-off gain in the previous year and supplies its own adjusted comparison. Its summary table shows prior-year PAT excluding the one-off as ₹1,929 crore. Use that disclosed measure; rounded figures and accounting treatment can make a mechanical subtraction differ slightly.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 | Q2 FY26 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Reported PAT | ₹2,205 crore | ₹3,627 crore |
| PAT excluding specified prior one-off | ₹2,205 crore | ₹1,929 crore, bank-disclosed |
| Net interest income | ₹4,228 crore | ₹3,285 crore |
| NIM | 4.11% | 3.71% |
| Gross / net NPA | 2.12% / 0.17% | 2.65% / 0.21% |
IDBI Bank: keep the comparison bases separate
₹ crore
| Label | Value (₹ crore) |
|---|---|
| Q2 FY26 reported PAT | 3627 |
| Q2 FY26 PAT excluding one-off | 1929 |
| Q2 FY27 reported PAT | 2205 |
The reported comparison uses ₹3,627 crore as its denominator. The adjusted comparison uses the bank’s disclosed ₹1,929 crore. This changes the question from “how did total reported earnings change?” to “how does current profit compare with the specified adjusted prior period?” Neither question should quietly replace the other.
Why the original gain was real, even if it was not repeatable
Selling an investment can generate real cash and a recognised accounting gain. Calling that gain one-off is a statement about the comparison and its expected recurrence, not a statement that the income never existed. Shareholders still need to understand what asset was sold and what earnings or strategic benefits may no longer be held.
At the same time, a sale cannot generally be repeated indefinitely from the same asset. Extrapolating a sale-enhanced quarter into the future can create an unrealistic earnings baseline. The analytical challenge is to respect the historical accounting while estimating the repeatability of each income source.
A hypothetical company earns ₹80 from its recurring operations and ₹50 from a single asset sale in year one. In year two it earns ₹90 from recurring operations and nothing from asset sales. Reported earnings fall from ₹130 to ₹90, or 30.8%, while recurring operating earnings rise 12.5%. This is a teaching example, not a restatement of IDBI Bank’s figures.
Net interest income tells a different part of the quarter
The release shows stronger net interest income and a higher net interest margin than in the comparable period. These measures concern the bank’s interest-earning business and funding costs. They do not, by themselves, include every other source of income, operating expense, provision or tax that determines final PAT.
It is possible for NII to rise while reported profit falls, just as it is possible for a business to sell more products while total earnings decline because the prior period included a large exceptional item. A complete reading connects the operating-income bridge to the final profit bridge rather than expecting every growth rate to have the same sign.
Margin improvement also needs context. It can reflect asset pricing, funding cost, product mix and the balance-sheet denominator. An annualised NIM is not the return earned by a depositor, a shareholder or a mutual fund holding the stock. These are different claims on different cash flows.
The asset-quality improvement is useful, but not a complete credit review
Gross and net NPA ratios are below their prior-year levels in the release. That is relevant evidence. However, the ratios do not independently reveal the contribution from recoveries, new slippages, write-offs and growth in advances. The movement in the stock and the denominator should be examined together.
For illustration, an unchanged problem-loan amount can produce a lower ratio when the loan book expands. Conversely, a ratio can rise when the denominator contracts even without a sudden surge in new problem loans. That is why a researcher should connect the ratios to the underlying movement schedule and provisioning.
Provision coverage and capital adequacy serve different purposes. One describes protection against identified credit exposures under its definition; the other measures regulatory capital against risk-weighted assets. Neither means that every future risk has disappeared or that the whole reported cushion is immediately distributable as a dividend.
Ownership news and earnings news need separate files
Readers may also be following the bank’s strategic ownership developments. Those can affect governance, expectations and valuation, but they are a different event from the September-quarter operating result. A proposed or approved stake transaction should not be treated as an extra line of quarterly bank revenue.
Similarly, money paid by a buyer to an existing shareholder is different from fresh capital subscribed into the bank. Unless the transaction documents provide for a new capital infusion, a transfer of shares does not mechanically enlarge the bank’s cash balance. Read the ownership documents separately from the earnings release.
This article focuses on the results event. It does not infer completion of an ownership transfer, add a transaction premium, or use an announced deal price as a forecast of the traded share price.
What the next result would need to show
A useful follow-up is whether operating performance remains supported by the funding mix, margins and credit outcomes after the unusual base period moves out of the comparison. When the exceptional item disappears from the denominator, the headline growth rate can change again without an equally dramatic change in the underlying business.
Ask whether the improvement persists across several quarters, whether incremental growth produces acceptable credit costs, and whether operating expenses remain consistent with the revenue base. Keep the exact definition of every adjusted measure so the next comparison remains meaningful.
Using the result in fund research
Actual scheme exposure matters more than the fact that a fund holds “banking stocks”. Read the latest available portfolio and distinguish a holding in IDBI Bank from exposure to another bank, a financial-services fund or a banking index with different constituents.
Then separate accounting growth from investment return. A profit comparison can improve while a share price falls if expectations were higher, and the reverse can also occur. The official release is evidence about the business; it is not a complete valuation model or a direction to trade.
The important lesson is the denominator. Keeping ₹2,205 crore fixed while comparing it with two clearly labelled prior-period bases explains why a negative headline and positive adjusted growth can coexist without contradiction.
Reader questions
How can IDBI Bank profit fall 39% while adjusted profit grows 14%?
The comparisons use different prior-year bases. Q2 FY26 reported PAT included a one-off NSDL investment-sale gain; the bank separately discloses the prior period excluding that gain. The current-quarter profit is the same in both comparisons.
