Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.
How it works
An institution can tolerate a loss on a small holding within a diversified portfolio while the same amount of exposure is significant for an individual. Public disclosure of a purchase also does not reveal every consideration behind it. Demand is one input to research, not a completed assessment of future cash generation.
A simple example
A hypothetical institution invests 0.2% of its portfolio in an issue while a household proposes 40% of its savings. They may own the same shares but have very different concentration and liquidity risks. Familiar participation does not make the two decisions equivalent.
What to check
- Review valuation and business assumptions independently.
- Measure the position in your own total portfolio.
- Avoid replacing suitability analysis with name recognition.
