Explained on 26 October 2026. This is an educational answer drawn from the dated article below; examples are hypothetical unless a specific source observation is identified.
How it works
A weight is itself a proportion. Its movement can be expressed as an absolute share of the basket or as growth relative to its starting share. The second number can look much larger without implying a larger rupee gain. Neither measure is automatically an investment return.
A simple example
The review’s three-month CD component rises from 25.91% to 43.62%. That is 17.71 percentage points. Relative to 25.91%, the increase is about 68.35%. It is not a 68.35% return on the debt benchmark.
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| 43.62 − 25.91 | 17.71 percentage points |
| 17.71 ÷ 25.91 × 100 | About 68.35% relative increase |
What to check
- Write the old and new weights first.
- Label subtraction as percentage points.
- Use the old weight as the relative-change denominator.
