Choosing a platform

What should a mutual fund analysis platform actually give you, and what does MF Analyser cover?

Written by MF Analyser · last checked 3 October 2026

A useful platform shows four things beyond returns: risk-adjusted measures, rolling returns rather than one lucky window, the actual holdings underneath, and a TRI benchmark to judge against. MF Analyser computes all four for 8,564 schemes from AMFI NAV, and analyses your own portfolio from a CAS upload.

Judge a platform by four questions

Most fund websites show the same five return columns from the same AMFI feed. That is data entry, not analysis. The things that separate a research tool from a returns table are these:

  1. Does it adjust for risk? A fund that returned 18% by swinging 25% is not better than one that returned 15% swinging 11%. Without Sharpe, Sortino and drawdown you cannot tell those apart.
  2. Does it show rolling returns? A single 5-year CAGR depends on the two dates it was measured between. Rolling returns measure every window, so the fund cannot be flattered by a start date.
  3. Does it look through to the holdings? Overlap, sector and market-cap exposure are invisible in a returns table and are where diversification is actually won or lost.
  4. What is it benchmarked against? A Total Return Index, or a price index that ignores dividends and so flatters every fund by roughly the market's dividend yield each year?

Those four questions will separate the tools quickly, whichever one you end up using.

What you can do with it

  • Fund Research — every measure for one scheme: CAGR over each window, rolling returns, Sharpe, Sortino, standard deviation, maximum drawdown with the dates, beta, alpha, up and down capture, calendar-year returns, and the disclosed portfolio.
  • Compare — funds side by side, including pairwise portfolio overlap and the stocks they share.
  • Screener — filter and sort the whole universe on any measure rather than reading a pre-baked list.
  • Fund Ranking — categories ordered by return, with the window stated.
  • Portfolio Analysis — upload your CAS and the whole portfolio is measured as one fund, looked through to the companies, and checked for overlap. Reading the statement is free; analysis starts at ₹19.
  • Calculators — SIP, lumpsum, SWP, XIRR and retirement, on your own dates and amounts.

What it does not do, and will not

This matters more than the feature list, because it tells you what the tool is for:

  • No "best fund" lists, no star ratings, no buy calls. MF Analyser is not a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser or Research Analyst, and a ranking dressed up as research is a recommendation wearing a costume. You get the measures and the ordering you asked for; the judgement stays yours.
  • No expense ratio, AUM or portfolio turnover. We do not hold that data. Get it from the AMC factsheet.
  • No transactions. You cannot buy a fund here. Nothing on the site earns a commission on what you choose, which is the main reason there is no "recommended" list to begin with.
  • Holdings are not universal. Every fund house that publishes a NAV is covered for returns and risk (currently 55), but only the 49 that have filed a portfolio are covered for holdings and overlap — most of the industry by assets, not all of it. A fund that is missing shows as missing, not as zero.

For beginners and for people who do this all day

The same pages serve both, deliberately. Every measure carries a one-line explanation of what it means in the place it is shown, so a beginner is not expected to arrive knowing what Sortino is. And every measure states its window, its risk-free rate and its benchmark, so somebody who does know can check the arithmetic instead of trusting it.

Advisers get a layer on top: client portfolios kept separately per account, seats for staff with a per-seat report quota, and exports.

How to choose between platforms, honestly

We are not a neutral party about our own site, so here is the useful version: pick whichever tool answers the four questions at the top of this page, states the as-of date on every figure, tells you where its numbers come from, and is clear about what it does not know. Any platform that shows a return with no date attached, or a "best funds" list with no stated method, is selling something — and that includes us if we ever do it.

Also asked

Is MF Analyser free or paid?

Fund research, comparison, the screener, rankings and the calculators are free. Reading your CAS is free. Analysing an uploaded portfolio is paid, from ₹19 for one portfolio, because it is the expensive part to run.

Where does the data come from?

NAV from AMFI's daily publication, portfolios from the monthly disclosures AMCs file, and benchmark TRI values from the index providers. Every derived figure is arithmetic on those, with the method published.

Which investors is it most useful for?

Anyone deciding between funds that look similar on returns, anyone holding several funds who wants to know what is underneath them, and advisers running client portfolios who need the working shown.

Does MF Analyser recommend funds?

No, and it will not. It is not a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser or Research Analyst. It shows measurements with their method and date, and leaves the decision where it belongs.
