What it does

Can MF Analyser help me with a specific job — comparing two funds, finding overlap, checking a plan?

Written by MF Analyser · last checked 6 October 2026

Yes for most research jobs: comparing schemes on returns and risk, finding overlap between funds from any fund houses, checking Direct against Regular, screening a category, and analysing a whole portfolio from a CAS. No for buying a fund, for expense ratios, and for being told what to buy.

Three of these, worked through properly

"Are these two funds actually different?"

Put them side by side and read the overlap, not the returns. Two large-cap funds from different fund houses in our worked example overlapped 54.6% by portfolio weight, while two flexi-cap funds overlapped 31.8% — the mandate predicted the duplication better than the fund house did. If you are choosing between two funds, overlap barely matters; if you are considering holding both, it is the whole question.

"This fund returned more — is it just taking more risk?"

That is what Sharpe, Sortino, drawdown and down capture are for. A fund can beat another by falling just as hard and bouncing higher, which feels very different to live with. Our example pair: two funds at almost identical volatility, one earning 0.58 of excess return per unit of it and the other 0.21.

"How much is the Regular plan costing me?"

You do not have to take anyone's word for it, because the same fund publishes two NAV series. On HDFC Flexi Cap to 1 October 2026, Direct compounded 0.79 percentage points a year faster than Regular over ten years. On ₹10 lakh over twenty years that gap is about ₹22.6 lakh.

If you are an adviser

Client portfolios are scoped per account — you see your own clients and nobody else's. The Advisor plan adds your own metrics and thresholds, run across every scheme at once, with saved templates and export. The Firm plan covers unlimited client portfolios. Branded PDF reports, employee access, branded recommendations and 500-client storage run in the adviser workspace and are still being rolled out on this site.

Also asked

Can MF Analyser tell me which fund to buy?

No, and it will not. It is not a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser or Research Analyst. It shows measurements with their method and date; the choice stays with you or your adviser.

Can I buy mutual funds on MF Analyser?

No. Nothing is transacted here and no commission is earned on what you choose, which is also why there is no "recommended funds" list.

Can it compare funds across different categories?

Yes, though read it carefully — a mid-cap and a large-cap fund are not competitors, and comparing their returns directly says more about the market than about either manager.

Can it analyse funds held outside my CAS, like direct equity?

No. The portfolio tools read mutual fund holdings from a CAS. Shares held in a demat account are outside what this reads.
